The perfectly balanced neat rosette of aloes fit very well into a formal garden.   Aloes can be planted with near to any garden plant in the garden and the shade loving aloes species/hybrids will grow under trees where other plants will have difficulty to compete with trees.
Designing this garden can be a challenge. Knowledge of the basic needs of the succulents is essential,  for example there are succulents that need full sun and many succulents grow under bushes thus they need shade. Keep drainage in mind.
The water shortage in South Africa brought the attention of landscapers and garden designers on aloes which became popular landscape plants for the water saving garden.  Landscapers in other countries will find aloes worthwhile if given a chance.

photo above:  The two aloes in bloom from the left are Aloe thraskii and (Aloe arborescens x Aloe thraskii)hybrid and far right next to the rock-garden is Aloe arborescens also in bloom.

Aloes and succulents seem to fit into any design as here with a wooden bridge .
Succulents grow without problem under most trees, provided they get enough light.
Tip:- In countries with cold or wet winters it will be necessary to plant a deciduous tree so that the aloes and succulents get enough sun/light  in the winter.

photo left :- A.thraskii (in seed) is a perfect sculptured plant for a formal garden, here with  A.arborescens hybrids.   This photo was taken in the coastal town Bloubergstrand on the west coast near Cape Town, South Africa.

The habitat of Aloe thraskii is the warm east coast.  Some aloe species can be very adjustable.  Aloe hybrids are usually easy.

Aloes grow well in pots or containers for a neat formal garden. This garden is in the arid Namaqualand region of South Africa. The messemb blooms purple and the aloe orange in winter.
