Attract a variety of birds to visit or stay in the aloe succulent garden with nectar giving aloes and by catering different menus for the birds with a birdhouse shelter  for the shy bird types. Add a birdhouse, birdbath and a water dish  to turn your garden into a bird's paradise. Bird watching in your garden  is one of the fastest growing hobbies.  Combine bird watching and gardening  for the best hobby and the whole family can join in.

Plant shrubs with edible berries for the birds, preferably endemic plants to your region. Birds love fruit trees especially the fig tree, which can be a wild fig or the cultured fig tree. The fig or fruit tree will also attract a variety of insects, which in turn attracts more birds.
Cut any fruit open and place it on a bird feeding dish or stick the fruit into a sharp spike. An orange cut open will be enjoyed by most of the feathered  visitors, even if they are not fruit eaters.
The seed eating birds will need a feeding tray .  In winter the bird seeds can be set into hard fat which will give extra energy to the birds.
recipe:-  melt the hard fat and let it cool but not harden completely.   Then stir in the bird seeds and leave to set and harden.

All birds would appreciate a water dish and bird feeders.  Place the bird bath, water basin, water dish or feeders in an open area where the birds can see the cat or amongst vegetation which would hamper the cat.

Like on the photo where no cat can be comfortable crawling through the aloes.

A small feeding area in the garden, consisting of a thicket of assorted grasses is a joy to the birds and to the humans watching them.  The birds will entertain you with feats of agility, as they cling to swaying  thistles and grass stems while feeding on the seeds. In time new types of grasses will appear from seeds that the feathered gardeners picked up elsewhere.
The birds in your garden will help control populations of insects such caterpillars, flies, aphids, termites, (I do not know of birds that like to eat ants ?).   Do not use hazardous pesticides and chemicals in a bird garden.  You will find that there is no need to use poisons on the insects, as more and more birds learn that they are safe to come and eat the crawlies in your garden.
You may build a small hut to sit and watch the birds without them being aware that anybody is present.
Bird watching is a nice hobby for the family.
