Aloe camperi is from Ethiopia |
|
| Aloe camperi is an easy growing aloe plant with lovely flowers for the water saving garden | |
| Aloe camperi plants have a short stem. The leaves of Aloe camperi are dark green with a few faint flecks on the underside of the leaf near the stem. The rosettes of Aloe camperi are more open in shade. |
| Aloe camperi plants flower in early summer. The racemes are capitated and densely flowered. The color of the flowers is in soft shades starting with a pinkish tint to orange and opening yellow. |
| Aloe camperi is a popular and easy growing garden aloe. |
| These aloe plants make offshoots freely. If this aloe is planted in rich soil and given more than enough water, it will send out many offshoots making a dense mat of plants which does not have a pleasing affect as the short stemmed plants of Aloe camperi are all the same height - unlike Aloe arborescens and other bush type aloes where the rosettes seem to be arrange by hand with short stems in front to longer stems at the back. |
| Removing the offshoots will give strong plants with a large inflorescence as in the photo below. |
| Aloe camperi is not endemic to South Africa. It escaped into the wild and is now well established in a few places all over the country. I saw a large group in a very dry part of Namaqualand., where there was hardly any other vegetation. This aloe blooms in summer when very few South African aloes are in bloom. As I see it - the chances of hybrids taking over at the cost of endemic aloes are small. |
| Aloes are succulent plants, also known as fatplants. Given the right conditions they can be grown as a houseplant or as a potplant in the garden or greenhouse. |
photo:- Aloe camperi is easy to grow. It needs very little water or maintenance. |
| Watch out for any sign of ants. They carry the aphids into the rosette and that is a sure way to loose an aloe to rot. |
