Aloe speciosa   (South Africa)

This aloe is a bluish-green tree aloe from South Africa

Aloe speciosa is a single stemmed tree aloe growing up  to 6 meters high.

The flowers are large and dense on the raceme.  The inflorescens is unbanched with a single raceme but there can be as many as four infloerescens on one rosette. The flowers are pink changing to greenish-white as they open.  The long dark orange-brown fliaments exerted.. 
This aloe is unique in that the rosette is tilted sideways.
The habitat of this aloe is mostly  frost free but they grow very well in the karoo botanical garden where frost is common in the winter.  Once again.   The Karoo is very arrid - aloes can withstand cold better in dry conditions.  
Plant this aloe in a protected area of the garden under trees or near a wall, this will give protection against frost..

Aloe speciosa hybrid

aloe.speciosa.hybrid_small.jpg (5685 bytes) This hybrid is small with showy flowers. The rosette is only 40 cm high which is ideal for the garden.
