Raft-from-root style is formed when an exposed root grows new branches which develope into trunks forming trees that are attached to each other.  This photo was taken in the desert near Sossusvlei. The tree is a camelthorn tree Acasia erioloba.
It is amazing what the camel thorn trees will take in nature without dying, but you can forget to Bonsai it. The answer is probably in the deep taproot which does not want to be disturbed.  Growing from seed does not solve the problem either. It keeps on growing and dies when the space becomes too small.    This tree wants to reach for the sky or not at all.
