The trunks from a tree will grow methodically complimenting the overall shape of the tree. If a trunk is harmed or broken the balance will be restored in time as the tree grows.
It is interesting to note that three trunks are common but not four trunks.  Four trunks seems to be two trunks that split, or more often two trees growing close to each other with two trunks each.

Three trunks with a lovely balanced crown.
