Gasteria is drought resistant and overall an
easy decorative plant in the garden. It is endemic only to South Africa
and is closely related to aloes in the sub-family Alooideae. A few
gasteria species are sensitive to overwatering or water/rain not in their growing season.
One of these is Gasteria It is not as sensitive to being wet as aloes.
Propagation can be done with the leaves, strictly speaking by just putting a leaf, or a
portion of a leaf into soil or sand. The leaf should be kept dry to slightly
damp. |

| Here are a few caudiciform plants and
succulent plants with colorful flowers or interesting leaves, which have the same
needs as the aloes in the water saving garden. |

| There are 16 species in the genus Gasteria and many species
have variations. This short page is not for identification, but just an idea of
what some Gasteria sp. look like. The flowers with the round
belly-shape(gasteriform) are something special with their lovely soft colors. |
